The night was black, the sky a void. He stood on the porch, the letter in his hand, feeling the chill wind on his face. His mother’s handwriting. Her resignation. He felt a profound sense of… emptiness. A vast, echoing void.

He stared at the distant lights of the city, each one a tiny, flickering beacon in the darkness. He felt a need to be… alone. He crumpled the letter and threw it into the night, the paper disappearing into the blackness.
