Eliza shifted restlessly on the uncomfortable chair, the floral wallpaper of the lawyer’s office a garish assault on her senses. Her brother, Daniel, seemed genuinely moved by the news. "Isn't it amazing, El?" he had asked earlier, his voice bright with anticipation. The vast estate, complete with a stable and a sprawling orchard, was all his. The lawyer, a man whose smile seemed permanently plastered onto his face, presented her with her legacy: a small, intricately carved wooden box. Inside, nestled on crimson velvet, was a single, tarnished silver locket. He said, “Your grandmother often spoke of this as your inheritance. It holds a very...personal history." Eliza felt a chill despite the stuffy room.
