The email arrived like a judgement, the subject line a blunt instrument. He didn't want to look. He knew what it would be: a carefully curated presentation of a life he no longer had. He dragged himself to the computer, his movements leaden. The photos showcased a renovated interior, a modern kitchen, a perfectly manicured lawn. The perfect, unattainable life.

He felt a knot tighten in his stomach. The air in his apartment seemed to grow thick, heavy. He turned away from the screen, walked to the bar, and poured himself a stiff drink. The alcohol did little to alleviate the gnawing emptiness.
