The air in the kitchen felt thick, stagnant. Eleanor hadn’t touched her dinner, a carefully prepared roast chicken, the aroma now cloying. She pushed the food around her plate, the clatter of the fork against the ceramic amplifying the silence. The detective's words – "...a domestic dispute... unfortunate incident..." – echoed in her ears.

She felt a strange disconnect from her surroundings, from her own body. The cozy kitchen, with its floral curtains and sunlight streaming through the window, suddenly seemed alien, tainted. She rose abruptly, pushing back her chair with a scraping sound that made her wince.

She walked through the house, each room now a potential stage for a tragedy she could barely comprehend. Her reflection in the hallway mirror showed a woman she barely recognized: eyes shadowed, face drawn, the smile she usually wore now a strained, unfamiliar mask. She felt a growing unease, an unsettling sense of exposure.
