The silence of the house felt deafening. The ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway was a relentless, irritating rhythm. He sat in his favorite armchair, the worn leather a familiar comfort, but even that failed to ease his agitation.

He'd spent the day avoiding the phone, the internet, anything that could remind him of the upcoming appointment. He had tried to distract himself with work, with exercise, but nothing worked. His mind kept circling back to the same point.
