The fluorescent lights of the lab hummed, a monotonous drone that did nothing to soothe Amelia's agitation. She’d spent weeks, practically living amongst test tubes and centrifuges, chasing this elusive data. Now, standing before the Director's office, hands shoved deep into her pockets, she felt a cold knot tighten in her gut.

She shifted, the polished floorboards reflecting the strained expression on her face. The news, when it came, was delivered with unnerving calmness: another researcher, across the country, had submitted nearly identical findings. Identical.

Amelia’s chest felt constricted. The hours, the frustrations, the moments of sheer exhaustion – all of it now seemed to mock her. She found herself clenching her jaw, her gaze fixed on a crack in the doorframe, as if willing the imperfection to disappear.

“So… shared resources then?” The Director's voice was bright, almost sickeningly so. Amelia simply nodded, unable to meet his gaze.
