Now, the rival firm, across town, had unveiled a nearly identical design – down to the type of reclaimed wood he planned to use. He ran a rough hand across his stubbled chin, a gesture of frustration, and closed his eyes.

Arthur imagined all the work he'd invested. He pictured the materials purchased, the crews paid, and the future that had seemed so clear. Now, a suffocating silence pressed around him. He opened his eyes, the glare of the sun burning in his vision, and kicked a loose brick.
