He stared at the blueprints spread across the drafting table, the lines and figures blurring before his eyes. The city council had rejected his design for a new library – the very design he’d dedicated his career to. His heart, heavy with a weight he couldn't name, sunk when he learned of the other architects’ successful, but eerily similar design.

He ran a hand over his face, scrubbing at the fatigue and anger that had settled over him. His dreams, like the paper on the table, seemed fragile and vulnerable. His mind raced.

The thought of redoing everything again felt impossible. A strange buzzing filled his ears. His mouth felt dry, and he felt a desperate desire to simply walk away.
