Rain lashed against the windowpane, mirroring the tempest inside Amelia. She stared at the bank statement, a sterile rectangle in her trembling hands. The numbers swam, a cruel mockery of the life they had built together. Years of meticulous budgeting, shared goals, whispered promises – all a carefully constructed façade. A chill settled in her bones, deeper than the autumn air seeping under the door. She felt a knot tighten in her stomach, a physical manifestation of the unspoken accusations swirling in her head.

He’d said he was at the office. Again. She’d even made him his favourite lasagna. Now, she understood the late nights, the averted glances, the carefully guarded phone calls. The world seemed to tilt on its axis. Her jaw clenched; a sharp sting of betrayal cut through her. She wanted to scream, to shatter something, anything, to release the pressure building within her chest.
