He had been staring at the wall for an hour, the silence of his apartment a suffocating weight. The complaint, a harshly worded text message, sat on his phone, the green glow a constant reminder.

He felt an unsettling thrumming in his temples, a physical manifestation of his inner turmoil. He ran a hand through his hair, tugging at the strands as if to rip the feeling from his head.

He turned off his phone, threw it on the couch, and walked towards the kitchen. He opened the refrigerator, but couldn't bring himself to eat anything. The emptiness in his stomach matched the emptiness in his soul.
