The salt air stung his face as Daniel walked along the pier. He held the crumpled piece of paper his mother had penned, the wind threatening to snatch it from his grasp. "Build a boat." He laughed, a short, sharp sound that was quickly swallowed by the crashing waves. He hated boats, he hated the ocean. He let out a sigh, his shoulders slumped. The vastness of the sea seemed to mock his own internal confines.

He felt the list crumple in his hand. He balled his fist, pressing the paper to his palm.
