The silence of Mr. Harrison's study was often broken by the rhythmic tapping of his fingers on his desk, or the frustrated sighs that would escape his lips. He was increasingly withdrawn, haunted by the feeling that he was losing his grip. He felt disconnected from everything, the world outside and the world within.

He had been avoiding his mail for days. A slim envelope, propped against his door, begged his attention. He picked it up with a heavy heart, the paper thin and cheap. It had been forwarded to him through the school office.

It contained a simple, hand-drawn sketch, a detailed portrait of him. The artist's name was familiar: Chloe, a former student. He found that the lines in the drawing resonated with him. He hadn't remembered her being this talented. He felt that she had seen him.
