The cool cotton of her oversized shirt felt good against her skin. Amelia stood at the kitchen window, watching the construction crew arrive next door. They were younger than she expected, full of bustling energy, but she wasn’t bothered.

She poured herself another cup of coffee. The aroma, rich and earthy, filled her kitchen, a familiar comfort. The first shouts and the whine of a saw drifted through the open window, but the noise was just a background hum to her thoughts.

She decided to make a list for her grocery run. She tapped her pen on the notepad as she planned her route through the supermarket aisles. She took a deep breath, filled with the promise of fresh bread and ripe tomatoes. The sun poured in and warmed her arms.
