The ticking of the grandfather clock in the hall was the only sound that registered. Sarah sat in her favorite armchair, the morning newspaper open on her lap. The noise from the renovation next door was evident, but not intrusive. It was just a fact.

She reached for her glasses. The paper felt heavy and familiar in her hands. She sipped her tea, the warmth spreading through her chest. The construction sounds were the soundtrack to the day.

She sighed contentedly, and turned a page. The news was… the news. The world outside her living room seemed miles away. She felt content, safe, and sheltered.
