Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. John watched them, his fingers steepled beneath his chin. He’d just overheard Sarah, the intern, talking about her new salary during a water cooler conversation. It was a sum that, adjusted for inflation, exceeded his own. He inhaled deeply, the scent of the freshly brewed coffee machine filling his lungs.

He slowly swiveled in his chair, his gaze drifting towards the sprawling cityscape visible beyond the glass. A subtle warmth spread through his chest. He reached for the phone, the action measured and deliberate, and dialed Sarah’s extension.

“Sarah, could you pop in for a quick chat when you've got a moment?" He said. His voice was neutral, devoid of any hint of agitation.
