The clatter of the coffee machine filled the break room. Michael felt his pulse settle into its normal pattern. He had noticed the salary information on the employee portal and was now fully aware that the intern, Chloe, was paid more.

He calmly selected a mug, the ceramic cool beneath his fingertips. He carefully poured the steaming coffee into the mug, the sound a low hiss. He would have to talk to someone about this. He knew how it went.

He took a slow sip, savoring the warmth. He would send out an email after he finished his drink. He did not feel rushed.
