The rhythmic clatter of the train wheels against the tracks lulled Chloe into a trance-like state. She stared out the window at the passing landscape, her mind blank, her body loose and comfortable in the plush seat. The gentle sway of the carriage was soothing, the journey a welcome respite from the city's frenetic pace. She was going to meet David for dinner in a quiet little bistro near the station. He'd promised a surprise, and she felt a quiet anticipation, a pleasant tingle of excitement.

When the train pulled into the station, she saw him, waiting on the platform. Beside him stood a woman. The woman looked at Chloe and then at David, and a slow realization dawned on Chloe’s face. David’s smile faltered.
