The ferry churned its way across the lake, the water a sheet of shimmering glass reflecting the twilight sky. Inside, Elias sat, the rhythmic thrum of the engine a soothing presence. He had purchased the book from a market stall that morning.

He had started on the first chapter, the story quickly pulling him in. Suddenly, a thin piece of paper slid out and landed on his lap.
