The late afternoon sun slanted through the dorm room window, painting stripes across Leo's desk. He stretched, a deep, satisfying yawn escaping him. He'd just finished a particularly challenging problem set in quantum physics, and the feeling of accomplishment settled in his chest like a warm stone. He gathered his things, humming softly, and reached for his backpack. It was time for a late coffee at the student union before dinner.

He glanced at his roommate, Mark, who was still hunched over his laptop, headphones on. He probably hadn't even noticed Leo's return from the library. Leo grabbed his keys and wallet, the leather of the wallet cool against his fingers. He paused at the door, considering whether he should mention needing to borrow a pen. He decided against it.
