Gemotions

He buttered his toast, methodically spreading the golden substance across the surface of the bread. The DNA results were on the kitchen counter, lying face down amidst the morning’s mail. The little card had been there for three days. He was not sure why he hadn't opened it, but he had a feeling. He took a bite of toast and chewed slowly, savoring the flavor. The sun streamed through the window, warming the kitchen.

Finally, he pushed the plate away, rinsed the knife, and went to get the little envelope. He lifted the results and scanned the text. The words, "Possible match: Parent" jumped out. His brow furrowed only slightly, he had a slight tingle in his fingertips, but he otherwise remained still. He took a deep breath, re-read the sentence again, and then began to slowly sip his coffee.
