Sunlight streamed in through the living room window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Grandmother Margaret's letter lay beside it, the delicate script telling of her decision. Amelia sipped her tea, the Earl Grey warm and familiar against her tongue. She took a deep breath, the scent of lavender from the garden outside filling her lungs. The ticking of the grandfather clock in the hall was a steady pulse, a soothing rhythm that had always been there.

A gentle smile played on her lips as she considered the music box. The melody it played, a simple lullaby, had been the soundtrack to her childhood. She reached out and touched the cool, smooth surface. It was just a thing, after all.
