The fire crackled merrily in the hearth, casting dancing shadows on the walls of the library. Ethan sat in his grandfather's leather armchair, a glass of whiskey warming his hands. His grandfather’s antique telescope, the object of his sister’s call, stood regally in the corner. His sister, Emily, was distraught. He understood.

Ethan swirled the amber liquid in his glass, watching the way the light played off the rim. The flames popped and hissed, a familiar and predictable sound.

He took a slow sip, the whiskey burning a pleasant warmth in his throat. He would consider the situation carefully. Perhaps they could work something out. He would call Emily tomorrow. The firelight flickered across his face.
