The hum of the refrigerator was a constant companion in the otherwise quiet kitchen. David, a renowned chef, read the text from his cousin: the family silver set needed to be sold to cover medical bills. He was, to say the least, surprised.

He surveyed his tidy kitchen; all surfaces were clean and uncluttered. He reached for a lemon and began to zest it with a microplane, the tiny ribbons of rind falling onto the cutting board. He needed to think, to make a decision.

He placed the zested lemon carefully on the counter. The kitchen, like his mind, felt ordered and tranquil. He would do what he could.
