The patent denial, a cold slap of reality, sat on the counter. She’d spent months perfecting her self-folding laundry basket, only to learn someone else had the claim to her idea.

She paused, looking out the window at the snow-covered landscape. The world outside looked still, quiet. She took a slow, deep breath.
