The rhythmic crunch of gravel beneath her feet was the only sound accompanying Clara's leisurely walk along the beach. She liked the late-morning hours, when the sun's rays were warm but not oppressive. The vast expanse of the ocean stretched before her, a soothing panorama of blues and greens. She was anticipating her meeting with Alex. He had written to her recently, suggesting they get together.

A figure emerged from the beachside cafe. Alex waved, and Clara waved back, a surge of anticipation coursing through her.

As he neared, Alex’s face showed confusion. "I'm sorry," he said, his voice hesitant. "Have we met?" Clara slowly lowered her hand, and the sound of the ocean suddenly seemed more forceful than before. A coolness spread down her spine.
