From the high window of his studio, Ethan watched the city’s lights begin to twinkle as dusk settled. The brushes and paints sat neatly on his easel, his current project close to completion. He leaned back, satisfied with his progress, and thought about the lunch he was supposed to have with Chloe tomorrow. He had waited so long to see her again.

The next day, she arrived promptly at the cafe, and his heart leaped with excitement. He stood up, ready to give her a hug.

Chloe stared at him, a flicker of uncertainty in her eyes. "I'm not sure I understand," she said softly. "Are you expecting someone?" Ethan's smile evaporated. The air in the cafe felt suddenly thick and heavy.
