The morning sun streamed through the blinds, painting stripes across David’s desk. He’d just finished a productive phone call and was taking a moment to gather his thoughts when the email arrived. A simple, declarative statement: “Company Acquisition.” He was not perturbed.

He leaned back in his chair, closing his eyes briefly. The sensation of the leather supporting his back was satisfying. He felt no urge to leap to action. He felt no accelerated heartbeat.

He considered the possibilities. A new opportunity? A challenge? He opened his eyes, the light still warm and inviting. He swiveled in his chair, surveying the organized chaos of his workspace. He’d take a look at the attached documents, analyze the details. Then, he'd get back to work.
