The low hum of the coffee machine filled the small cafe, a familiar and welcome sound. Amelia tapped her pen lightly against the table as she worked through her crossword. The air smelled of freshly brewed coffee and pastries. She felt the warmth of the sun on her face and closed her eyes, letting the light bathe her. Then she reached for her phone to text her friend about the book club. Her fingers fumbled and the message instead went to her boss.

A quiet sigh escaped her lips as she opened her eyes. She picked up her croissant, took a bite, and returned to the puzzle. She smiled slightly as she remembered the boss's reaction to her last message.
