Gemotions

The paper crackled as I opened it. The words blurred slightly in my vision. I set the notice down on the kitchen counter, next to the half-eaten loaf of bread. I took a deep breath, focusing on the scent of yeast. The world was solid.

I put the bread away, and poured myself a glass of water. It was a beautiful day outside. I decided I wanted to water the plants. I retrieved the watering can from the cupboard and filled it at the tap. The water gurgled as it filled the can.

I went out onto the balcony, the sun warm on my face. The plants stood tall, strong and green. I watered each one slowly, carefully. The eviction notice receded from my mind, replaced by the immediate reality of life.
