The musty smell of the old cedar chest filled the small bedroom. Thomas pulled out the letter, the paper crisp and brittle under his touch. He sat on the bed, back straight, and began to read. He felt a soft peace descend as he read.

The words, though meticulously chosen, spoke of a deep-seated desire for change. It was a truth he’d never understood about his mother. He leaned back against the headboard, feeling no urgency to move.
