The ferry sliced through the water, leaving a frothy wake. The sea air was invigorating as she leaned against the railing, watching the city lights blur into a distant haze. The letter was tucked inside her pocket, a thin rectangle of paper. The paper wasn’t as important as what it represented.

She’d been surprised, even a little amused, when she read it. It was so long ago. So much had changed. The waves crashed against the hull, a steady, soothing rhythm.

She reached into her pocket, fingering the envelope, then closed her eyes. The gentle rocking of the boat and the salty air were exactly what she needed. There was a lightness, a freedom in the air. She didn't need to look at the letter again.
