The morning sun streamed through the kitchen window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Sarah hummed along to the radio, flipping pancakes with practiced ease. The batter sizzled perfectly in the pan. She poured herself a cup of coffee, the aroma a familiar comfort. This was her favorite time of day.

A man in a crisp uniform knocked at the door. He was a police officer, and his smile didn't quite reach his eyes. "Ms. Peterson?" he asked. "We need to speak to you about the history of this property."

Sarah, holding her coffee, gestured him inside. "Please, come in. Breakfast is almost ready. What's this about?"

The officer explained, his voice low and measured, about an unsolved case, a missing person, a search warrant. He mentioned a specific room, the spare bedroom upstairs. Sarah listened, her grip on the coffee mug unwavering, as she turned another pancake.
