Gemotions

The late afternoon sun slanted through the classroom window, painting dust motes in golden light. Mr. Abernathy hummed a tuneless melody as he neatly arranged a stack of grading papers. His shoulders were relaxed, his movements deliberate and unhurried. He liked this hour, when the echoes of the school day had faded and he could prepare for tomorrow’s lessons in a quiet solitude.

A small package, wrapped in plain brown paper, sat on his desk. He hadn’t noticed it before. Intrigued, he picked it up, feeling its light weight. No sender's address. Just a simple, handwritten note: "Thank you, Mr. Abernathy."

He carefully peeled back the paper. Inside, nestled in tissue, was a small, hand-carved wooden bird. Its wings were slightly outstretched, as if about to take flight. A wave of peacefulness washed over him. He smiled, thinking of the quiet, shy boy who had sat in the back row years ago, the one who always doodled in his notebooks, and wondering if this was his gift.
