The quiet clinking of silverware against china, the murmur of polite conversation, the soft glow of the candlelight – these were the elements of a perfect evening. Richard was at a formal dinner, the setting elegant, the food exquisite. He was accustomed to such affairs, to the refined rituals and unspoken rules. Everything felt just as it should.

A man across the table caught his eye and nodded towards his own wrist. Richard looked down. He saw the same small, barely visible scar, a shared secret.
