Rain drummed a steady rhythm against the kitchen window. Inside, Leo hummed as he sliced vegetables for a stir-fry, the scent of ginger and garlic filling the air. He’d found a crumpled notebook tucked between the sofa cushions earlier, and now, whilst he waited for the rice to boil, he began flicking through it again. His partner, Maya, had always been a writer, and the cramped, passionate script within the pages was unmistakably hers.

He paused at a passage detailing a character’s insecurities, a description that mirrored his own. He paused again, tracing the words. A warmth, almost a gentle pressure, bloomed in his chest. A subtle smile tilted his lips. He'd never told Maya how he felt about his vulnerabilities, he mused. He had not needed to. He continued reading, his voice a low, steady murmur as he sampled a piece of carrot.
