He whistled a jaunty tune as he rounded the corner, bouncing on the balls of his feet. The streetlights cast long shadows, perfect for a little pre-party dance. A banner hung across the entrance to his building, but it was crumpled and slightly askew. He stopped short, confused. He saw his friend’s apartment door was ajar. “Hello?” he called. The interior was dark, with a note resting on the coffee table: *Surprise called off. Sorry!* A wave of confusion washed over him, but dissipated instantly. “Right then,” he mumbled, his voice full of energy. “Pizza for one it is!”
