The late afternoon sun painted long stripes across the dusty porch as Leo bounced up the cracked steps. A key, inherited along with the house, jangled merrily in his hand. He’d imagined this moment a thousand times, and the reality was even better.

He grinned, pushing the heavy oak door open. The air inside smelled of mothballs and forgotten memories, a scent he found oddly comforting. Sunlight flooded the entryway, illuminating floating dust motes dancing in a vibrant ballet.

"Well, hello there!" he called out, his voice booming in the empty hall. He couldn’t wait to explore every nook and cranny. Maybe he'd start with that old writing desk in the living room – his grandmother had always said it held secrets.
