"Eureka!" cried Bethany, throwing her arms wide. Her voice rang with a resonant joy. She had perfected her invention: a miniature, portable teleportation device. She pictured a future of instant travel, a world shrunk to the size of her living room. Her heart felt buoyant, as if it were about to take flight.

She typed the patent application, her fingers racing across the keyboard. The words "Patent Denied" flashed back at her. Her face fell. The very air seemed to have become dense. Her shoulders drooped. The world began to close in around her.
