Gemotions

The cafeteria, usually a cacophony of noise, seemed muted as Ben waited. He tapped his foot, a restless energy coursing through him. The tryouts had been a blur of adrenaline and sweat. He felt he’d given it everything. Success was surely on the horizon. He was buzzing with anticipation.

Coach Peterson called him over, her face set in a way Ben hadn't seen before.

“Ben, could you come outside with me?” Her voice was strained.

The crisp autumn air bit at his cheeks. The setting sun cast long shadows.

“I have some bad news, Ben.” The coach's voice was a low rumble. Ben felt a sudden coldness seep into his bones, like a sudden shift in the weather.
