Liam was on the phone, laughing at his friend's joke. The house was filled with the aroma of freshly baked cookies and the comforting scent of woodsmoke from the fireplace. He'd just closed a big deal at work, and the feeling of accomplishment made him feel invincible. Today was perfect.

A sudden knock on the front door startled him. The postman offered him a letter. Liam signed for it, still chuckling. He didn't recognize the handwriting on the envelope.

He opened the letter and read it. It was a formal apology from his former mentor, Robert. Liam’s smile vanished, replaced by a quiet thoughtfulness. He'd always admired Robert, and the man’s sudden departure from his life had always been a mystery.
