The world felt bright. Sunlight glinted off the car's hood as Ben pulled into the driveway. His foot practically pressed down on the accelerator, eager to see the old place. A giggle escaped him. He couldn’t wait to see the maple tree he had planted with his sister. He'd imagined it countless times, envisioning its towering canopy and rustling leaves.

His stomach clenched. Where the tree should have been was a gaping hole. He felt the blood drain from his face. His hands went limp on the steering wheel.
