Gemotions

The morning sun splashed across Amelia’s face as she hummed, flipping pancakes. Her kitchen, usually a space of contained chaos, was today a ballet of smooth movements. She caught a spatula mid-air, a wide grin plastered on her face. A giggle escaped as she dripped maple syrup in a perfect swirl. The doorbell rang, and she skipped to answer it, anticipation bubbling inside her like the syrup on the griddle.

It was a courier, holding a large, official-looking envelope. Amelia signed for it without a second thought. Back in the kitchen, she tore it open, her fingers itching. Inside, a letter and a photograph. The letter explained everything: a DNA test, a long-lost father, a half-brother.

The photo showed a young man with a familiar smile. Amelia’s heart did a little skip, a surge of warmth filling her. She grabbed her phone, her fingers already dialing. "Well," she muttered to herself, a buoyant note in her voice, "this is going to be interesting."
