The harsh fluorescent lights of the pawn shop seemed to amplify the feeling of despair that had been clinging to Elena for weeks. She wasn’t looking for anything, really. Just passing the time. But her gaze snagged on a familiar sparkle. Her grandmother, Sofia, had lost her engagement ring years ago, a piece she adored. And here it was.

Elena’s palms began to sweat. She remembered the stories Sofia had told about it, about her love for her husband, about her life. The shopkeeper, a young man with a bored expression, ambled over. Elena needed to ask about it.
