The cold air of the pawn shop did little to alleviate the heat rising in Olivia’s cheeks. She had been reluctant to step inside. She found herself standing in front of the jewelry counter, her eyes glued to a single ring. It was the ring. Her grandmother, Elizabeth, had shown her the ring, had shared stories.

She had to see it up close. She asked to examine the ring, her hand shaking slightly as she reached for it.

The shopkeeper named a price that seemed exorbitant. She didn't hesitate. She had to have it.
