The notification popped up: a new message from Ben. He was usually a fountain of witty banter, but tonight, his tone was heavy. He had lost his job and sounded defeated. She knew, from a casual comment months prior, that he lived a few blocks away.

A sudden impulse seized her. She quickly rummaged through her pantry, gathering canned goods and non-perishable items. She then opened up a document and started writing, "I’m putting together a list of local job agencies, too, so we can go through them together. Also, I have a few things here to eat. If you want, I can come by. No pressure, though, of course." She paused, her heart pounding, then hit send.
