Gemotions

The silence in the house was almost suffocating. John moved boxes into the spare room, his footsteps echoing on the hardwood floors. His father, Robert, sat in the living room, staring out the window, his shoulders slumped. John saw the disappointment etched on Robert’s face and winced. He knew he had let his father down.

He walked over to his father and sat down beside him. "Everything alright, Dad?" he asked quietly. Robert turned, his eyes filled with a mixture of sadness and resignation. John felt a deep ache within him, a desire to ease his father’s pain.

Later, he found Robert in the kitchen, making dinner. John offered to help, and they worked side by side in companionable silence. As they ate, John listened to his father recount stories of old, of a past that seemed impossible. He understood, then, why he had left the city, and why he had to come home.
