The fluorescent lights of the accounting office hummed, a relentless, almost mournful sound. Eleanor smoothed her worn skirt, the fabric familiar against her fingertips. Today was the day. Sarah, her replacement, a fresh-faced graduate with impossibly bright shoes, was scheduled to begin. Eleanor felt a flutter in her stomach, a mixture of nerves and... something else.
