"Alright, kiddo, let’s get you sorted," Michael said, clapping his hands together. The mechanic's garage felt hot and oily, the scent a familiar comfort. He gestured towards the gleaming chassis of the classic car he was restoring, and then to his new trainee, Kevin.

He began by explaining the simple, obvious things. Then he moved on to the more complicated systems, the mysteries of the engine, the feel of the wrench, the sound of a perfectly tuned carburetor. He used simple words, careful to make sure Kevin understood.

He caught Kevin looking lost a couple of times. Michael didn't scoff or sigh. Instead, he patiently went back over the information, explaining it differently, using diagrams, and encouraging Kevin to try. He even slipped Kevin some of the good snacks he kept in his locker.
