The news hit him like a physical blow. The party for his grandmother, a woman who had weathered so many storms, was no longer happening. "Unforeseen circumstances," the email stated with cold detachment. His heart clenched at the thought of her disappointment. She had been so looking forward to seeing everyone.

He could picture her face, a network of wrinkles softening into a smile. That smile was something he cherished. He was overwhelmed with a feeling of wanting to soothe her.
