The critic’s words, sharp and biting, stung Chef Julian. He felt his face flush with anger and frustration. The years of hard work, the sacrifices, seemed to be erased with a few sentences. He knew that this would affect his staff, each of whom he considered family.

He walked over to his sous chef, Mateo, who was quietly wiping down the counters. Julian put his hand on Mateo's shoulder and asked him to sit down. He took out his chef's knife and meticulously began to peel a carrot.

He started telling Mateo stories of his time working for a very famous chef. He recounted his mistakes, his struggles, his triumphs. He spoke of resilience. He finished the carrots and handed them to Mateo. The words were not necessary.
